"What do you mean they burned it?" Dialphio said, aghast.

"Exactly what I'm saying!" Dialphio jerked back, and I drew a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I'm just at a loss. Dialphio, I don't know what to do anymore."

She left to lock the front door, returning with hurried steps. "Ezekial, I need you to think as clearly as possible right now because I'm about to ask you something you have to be one hundred percent sure of."

Her statement gave me pause, but I answered truthfully. "Okay."

"Was it the Council?"

"Dialphio, it has to be."

She moved closer, her voice growing softer. "You said you didn't see his face."

"Well, right. But he got into my apartment through a gateway. Only Council members can open them."

She was already shaking her head. "That's not true. There are instances of others opening them, among other powerful spells. Those aren't restricted to just the Council, though that's what they want us to believe."

"Really?"

"Really," she said. "Now I'm not saying that's what happened, but you need to be sure. Especially before you race off on some half-cocked mission to take on the Council. You don't want to do that. You're not ready."

"They burned the book, Dialphio. Burned! Am I supposed to just sit around and accept that?"

"No." Her tone was flat, like she was lost in thought. Her eyes suddenly cleared, finding focus. "No, none of us should tolerate abuses of power. Ever. But to act without regard will only result in this ending poorly for you." She closed the distance and grabbed my hand. "And I don't want anything bad happening to you. You need to be very smart about how you proceed, from now on. In everything."

It wasn't like I wanted a war with the Council, I just wanted answers and to stop being bullied. In less than a year, they had pushed me into things I didn't want to be part of, forced me to witness horrific abuses and the death of a first of his name, put me in a situation where I accidentally killed another demon in self-defense, all while thinking they could demand my silence.

"What am I supposed to do?" My voice had lost its heat, knowing deep down that I wasn't smart enough to quit. Dialphio was right, I needed to be deliberate about how I proceeded or the Council would take care of my attitude problem.

The cleansing breath and clear thoughts didn't do anything for the heartache of knowing that Seraph was part of this, that she could have made a difference and chose not to.

I didn't need the sureties Dialphio did. The Council opened that gateway and sent a messenger to me. No doubt about that. No one else had a reason to bother with some obscure magic-less demon like me who possessed a cool halberd.

But even so, faulting the Council was not an explanation. I was meaningless to them. What do they care about me and anything I wanted? I was as good as useless, a tool they used to reach their goals, nothing more.
